The Ejura-Sekyedumase Municipal Assembly, in collaboration with the Member of Parliament for the constituency, Hon. Alhaji Mohammed Bawah Braimah, and the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), on Tuesday, 9th June 2026, distributed relief items and cash support to victims of recent disasters within the municipality.

The programme, held at the forecourt of the Municipal Assembly Block, was led by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Rafiu Adam Seidu, and attended by several dignitaries, including the Ashanti Regional Director of NADMO, Alhaji Abdul Nasiru; traditional authorities; Zongo Chiefs; members of the Christian Council; heads of departments and units; commanders of the various security services; Assembly Members; members of the Traditional Council; and affected residents.

The intervention benefited 60 households, comprising approximately 3,650 individuals, as well as three schools. The initiative forms part of the Assembly’s commitment to supporting residents affected by disasters and strengthening community resilience.

In his welcome address, the Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr. John Adongo, described the programme as a timely intervention aimed at bringing relief to affected residents.

He acknowledged the strong collaboration between the Municipal Chief Executive and the Member of Parliament in mobilizing support for disaster victims and commended the Municipal NADMO Directorate for its efforts in ensuring the success of the programme.

Mr. Adongo also expressed appreciation to His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, Hon. Mohammed Bawah Braimah, and Hon. Rafiu Adam Seidu for their continued support to the people during difficult times.

Addressing the gathering, Hon. Rafiu Adam Seidu expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for providing resources that enable Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies to respond effectively to emergencies and support affected communities. He also commended the collaborative efforts of the Member of Parliament, Hon. Mohammed Bawah Braimah, and the Paramount Chief of Ejura, Nana Osei Hwedie II, for their contributions to the development and welfare of the municipality.

The MCE disclosed that the relief package included 70 packets of roofing sheets, 100 pieces of 2 by 4 size wood, 11 boxes of roofing nails, 40 basins, 40 buckets, 5 bales of used clothing, 100 cups, 100 plates, 10 bags of maize, 100 mosquito nets, and cash support amounting to GHS 3,000. He noted that the assistance was intended to provide immediate relief to affected households and institutions while recovery efforts continue.

He also expressed his sympathy to the affected victims and assured them of the Assembly’s commitment to supporting them. He urged residents to adopt a proactive approach to disaster prevention and to comply with directives from relevant authorities, particularly those relating to construction in waterways and flood-prone areas.

He further encouraged homeowners to engage qualified electricians for electrical installations and maintenance in order to reduce the risk of electrical fires. Additionally, he called on residents to report unauthorized developments in waterways, emphasizing that the actions of a few individuals can have far-reaching consequences for entire communities.

The Ashanti Regional Director of NADMO, Alhaji Abdul Nasiru, highlighted the organization’s mandate in disaster prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery.

He urged residents to pay attention to safety advisories and embrace preventive measures such as adhering to fire safety protocols, desilting drains, maintaining clean surroundings, and avoiding activities that contribute to disasters.

He also commended the collaboration between the Municipal Chief Executive and the Member of Parliament in mobilizing support for affected residents.

As part of the programme, officers from the Ghana National Fire Service at the Ejura Fire Command, led by ADO I Lawrence Ackom and ADO II Abdulai Huzaima, educated participants on fire safety practices and common causes of fire outbreaks.

They demonstrated the proper use of fire extinguishers and provided guidance on responding to gas leaks and fire emergencies. The officers also encouraged residents to support emergency responders while avoiding actions that could hinder rescue and firefighting operations.

In his remarks, the Member of Parliament, Hon. Alhaji Mohammed Bawah Braimah, encouraged residents to remain united and supportive of one another during times of hardship. Reflecting on his previous role as the Municipal NADMO Director before becoming a Chief Executive and later a Member of Parliament, he noted that he understood the challenges faced by disaster victims.

He assured residents that efforts were underway to secure additional support for affected persons, although the current intervention could not fully compensate for all losses incurred. He further referenced the President’s directive to NADMO to intensify measures aimed at mitigating the impact of flooding and other disasters across the country.

Delivering the closing remarks on behalf of the Ejurahene, Nana Yaw Kontor expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama, the Member of Parliament, the Municipal Chief Executive, NADMO, and all stakeholders who contributed to the success of the intervention.

He encouraged residents to prioritize preventive measures in their daily activities, reminding them that

“prevention is better than cure.”

The relief distribution exercise reaffirmed the commitment of the Ejura-Sekyedumase Municipal Assembly, NADMO, the Member of Parliament, and other stakeholders to providing timely support to disaster-affected communities. Beyond the distribution of relief items, the programme also served as an important platform for public education on disaster prevention and preparedness, helping to build safer and more resilient communities within the municipality.
