Ejura Sekyedumase Municipality Launches Ultra-Modern Self-Cleaning Solar-Powered Street Lighting Project

Street lighting remains a critical component of urban and rural development, contributing significantly to safety, mobility, and economic activity. In a strategic effort to address challenges associated with inadequate and unreliable lighting, the Ejura Sekyedumase Municipality commenced the construction and installation of ultra-modern self-cleaning solar-powered dual street lighting systems on 20th February 2026 across key locations identified for their strategic importance and security needs.

These systems utilize renewable solar energy to provide consistent illumination while reducing dependence on conventional power sources. The deployment of this technology directly addresses persistent challenges associated with grid-dependent street lighting, including high electricity costs, unreliable power supply, and maintenance inefficiencies.

The project is being led by the Honorable Member of Parliament in collaboration with the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Rafiu Adam Seidu. This partnership reflects a shared commitment to infrastructure development and improved living conditions for residents, demonstrating a clear vision of building a safer, more inclusive, and progressive community.

The project covers several critical locations identified for their strategic importance and security needs. These include:

  • The major stretch from Dromankuma to Kasei
  • The Ejura Prisons enclave and its surrounding streets
  • All Police Posts within the Municipality
  • The Ejura Cemetery
  • The Municipal Assembly premises
  • The Education Directorate premises

The selection of these areas underscores the Municipality’s commitment to improving security infrastructure, supporting public institutions, and enhancing visibility in high-priority zones.

The installed systems are ultra-modern, integrated solar-powered dual lighting units designed for efficiency, durability, and optimal performance. Each unit is engineered with the following components:

  • High-efficiency photovoltaic (PV) panels for solar energy generation
  • Long-lasting lithium-ion battery storage systems for reliable nighttime operation
  • Dual LED luminaires to ensure broader and brighter illumination coverage
  • Intelligent charge controllers for battery protection and optimized energy management
  • Weather-resistant poles and fixtures suited to the local tropical climate

A distinguishing feature of these systems is the integrated self-cleaning solar panel mechanism, engineered to maintain optimal energy generation efficiency. The solar panels are designed with hydrophobic and dust-resistant surface coatings, as well as tilted mounting angles that facilitate natural cleaning through rainfall and gravity-assisted dust shedding. In some installations, automated or semi-automated cleaning components may be incorporated to periodically remove accumulated debris.

This self-cleaning functionality significantly reduces the accumulation of dust and particulates—common in the Municipality’s environment—which can otherwise degrade panel performance. As a result, the system maintains consistent energy output, improved operational efficiency, extended panel lifespan, and reduced maintenance requirements, minimizing the need for frequent manual cleaning interventions.

The dual-light configuration significantly improves light distribution, making roads, public spaces, and institutional areas safer and more accessible at night.

The project is being executed through a structured and professional approach, which includes detailed site assessments, installation of high-quality and self-cleaning systems by qualified contractors, rigorous testing, and community engagement to ensure the sustainability and protection of the infrastructure. This comprehensive methodology guarantees that the benefits of the project will be realized both now and in the long term.

This initiative is expected to deliver significant benefits, including:

  • Enhanced public safety through improved illumination
  • Increased nighttime visibility for motorists and pedestrians
  • Support for local businesses by extending commercial hours
  • Strengthening of security and public institutions
  • Reduction in energy costs through solar power adoption
  • Reliable lighting independent of the national grid
  • Reduction in carbon emissions through the use of clean solar energy
  • Improved efficiency and reduced maintenance through self-cleaning solar panel technology

Beyond these immediate benefits, the project represents a major step toward modernizing infrastructure within the Municipality.

This initiative aligns with the Government of Ghana’s Renewable Energy Master Plan (REMP) and the broader national agenda of advancing clean and sustainable energy solutions. By investing in solar-powered infrastructure and adopting innovative technologies such as self-cleaning systems, the Ejura Sekyedumase Municipality is contributing to national efforts to reduce carbon emissions, promote green growth, enhance energy security, and ease pressure on the national grid.

The Municipality expresses its sincere appreciation to H.E. John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, for his continued commitment to infrastructure development and sustainable energy initiatives across the country. Special recognition is also extended to the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Dr. Frank Amoakohene, for his unwavering support and coordination in facilitating development projects within the region. Their leadership has been instrumental in bringing this transformative project to fruition.

The installation of these ultra-modern self-cleaning solar-powered dual street lights represents a significant milestone in the development of the Ejura Sekyedumase Municipality. Through strong collaboration between national and local leadership, this project will enhance safety, promote economic activity, and improve the overall quality of life for residents.

Together, we are building a safer, brighter, and more progressive Ejura Sekyedumase.
