Eura-Sekyedumase Farmers Receive Cashew Seed and Seedlings

With Cashew, gradually becoming one of the major Cash-crop in Ghana, the Government has intensified efforts to improve its production significantly in the years ahead. Among these efforts is the launching of the Government’s policy for Rural Development and Income Generation, which is under the National Tree Crop Programme dubbed “Planting for Export and Rural Development” (PERD).

In line with this policy, Hon. Alhaji Mohammed Salisu Bamba, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ejura-Sekyedumase distributed (three) 3kilograms of cashew seedlings to over 1,835 Cashew Farmers each from the Frante Township and its environs within the Municipality.

The Seeds and seedlings are expected to cover over 3,670 acres of farm land. The crafted cashew seedlings are an improved variety, with a shorter period of maturity, compared to the local breed.

In addressing the gathering at Frante, the M.C.E noted that, the cashew development initiative just the like the government planting for food and jobs flagship programme, aimed at diversifying the country’s agriculture sector.

He said the project was one of the key strategic interventions for the “Ghana Beyond Aid” Agenda in line with government’s coordinated Programme of Economic and Social Development Policies and the PERD programme launched by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

He explained that, under the project, farmers will not only be receiving free seedlings but will be supported technically for a successful cashew production in the municipality and also urged farmers to take advantage of the various Agricultural interventions and incentives to increase production and improve their livelihoods.

Similarly, over 60,000 seedlings were distributed to farmers around Sekyedumase and its environs. This gesture in all is to ensure that farmers in the Municipality are not left out of government’s flagship ‘Planting for Export and rural Development’ programme.

In a related development the MCE took the opportunity to inform the famers of the increase of Agric Extension Officers for 12 to 82 and also the procurement of 22 AG Motor Bicycles and other logistics which were distributed to them on the same day to aid in their work of monitoring and supervising farmers with their farm activities.

The beneficial farmers expressed their profound gratitude to the government for the initiative and thus promise to work very hard to increase cashew production in the municipality.
