municipal IT/MIS Officer

The Municipal IT / MIS officer manages and supports a municipality’s technology infrastructure, ensuring secure, reliable, and efficient IT services for staff, council, and public-facing systems.

Key Responsibilities
Technical Support and Infrastructure Management

  • Install, configure, and maintain computer hardware, software, and network systems, including desktops, laptops, servers, printers, routers, switches, firewalls, and VPNs
  • Troubleshoot and resolve IT issues for municipal staff and council, providing helpdesk support and end-user training
  • Monitor and maintain system performance, backups, and security measures, including antivirus protection, access controls, and data integrity
  • Plan and execute IT projects such as system upgrades, migrations, and new software deployments

Policy, Governance, and Compliance

  • Develop, implement, and enforce IT policies, procedures, and standards to ensure compliance with municipal regulations and security best practices
  • Advise municipal leadership on technology strategy, vendor management, and IT governance
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend solutions to improve efficiency, productivity, and service delivery

Collaboration and Communication

  • Work closely with municipal departments to understand IT needs and provide tailored solutions
  • Coordinate with external vendors, managed service providers, and contractors to ensure service agreements are met
  • Prepare reports, documentation, and presentations for council or management regarding IT operations, budgets, and project status

Municipal IT officers often balance hands-on technical work with strategic oversight, especially in smaller municipalities where they may serve as the primary IT resource. They play a critical role in ensuring that municipal services, both internal and public-facing, operate efficiently and securely, supporting the municipality’s overall mission and compliance with legislation.
